Willow is excited to host a musical theatre camp this summer, led by a talented alum! The second session of the summer camp, led by Willow alum Alec Steinhorn and friend and fellow thespian Spencer Knoll, starts August 14.
During the camp’s fist session, Alec and Spencer led young actors in singing, playwriting, and improvisation exercise, and campers studied set and costume design. The second session will be a more intensive program, spanning ten days and focusing on creating songs, monologues, and scenes. Camp attendees will perform selections of their work in a showcase at the end of camp.
The idea for the program came out of a conversation that Alec had with Willow’s music teacher and performing arts director, Mrs. Gina Lefferts. With Mrs. Lefferts’ encouragement, Alec recruited Spencer and started the camp, their first.
One of the challenges the directors faced was predicting how each day of camp would run during the first session. “Doing things based on what the kids wanted had us working every day after camp at one of our houses to plan the next day,” said Alec. “The program is very centered on how the kids grasp the material and what they want to do.”
Alec and Spencer are looking forward to the second session, where they will have even more time to help students hone their talents. The session that begins on August 14 promises to inspire students to pursue their theatrical interests during the camp and beyond. It is open to kids who attended to first session and those who are totally new to the program.
