Intermediate School – Grades: 3-5

At the intermediate level, each child is provided with opportunities to explore, investigate, analyze and interpret core concepts. Ours is an inquiry-based curriculum, and learning experiences are intentionally constructed to integrate ideas across disciplines. We are committed to a “pedagogy of listening and doing:” listening to learn, listening to understand another’s point of view without judgment. Validating and valuing others makes meaningful and collaborative inquiry possible. Teachers at the intermediate level inspire and challenge students to take intellectual risks in a safe, supportive environment. We honor a child’s innate curiosity and utilize it to foster flexible, critical thinking, problem solving, and research skills through project-based and skill-based learning. We understand that intellectual curiosity, having ideas that excite, and acting on them is at the heart of lifelong learning.

Reflecting on the process of thinking and being given opportunities to communicate with others reinforce and enhance students’ learning by developing a genuine understanding of what they have studied.  Intermediate Level students experience our School’s commitment to sustainable and ethical living. These ideas provide a lens through which students consider issues confronted in all areas of the curriculum. Service-learning projects and activities, inspired by each grade’s curriculum, offer students authentic experiences and foster deeper understanding.
